Physiotherapists are considered primary health care practitioners

In Ontario, physiotherapists are considered primary health care practitioners, so a referral from a doctor is not necessary. As such, you may be able to refer yourself for physiotherapy services. However, if you have coverage for physiotherapy treatment through an extended health benefit plan, the insurance company may require a doctor’s referral. Check with your extended health benefit to clarify.
